This work is profusely color-illustrated with some 80 plates. There are very few references on this artist. This is the first major monographic work on the artist , and was issued by the museum that has a large collection of his woodblock prints, drawings and paintings.
This comprehensive catalogue gives the collector and student a keen insight to the breath and the depth of Koitsu's mostly unknown works. On a par with Yoshida Hiroshi, Kawse Hasui and Takahashi Shotei [Hiroaki] and others, his works are strikingly fascinating, often producing night, evening and dawn time prints, taking good advantage of low-light times.
He was very skillful in that he used elegant tones and hues of blue in a subtle and subdued, but marvelous impression of nature and scenery. A good number of his works were drawn at dusk or sunrise when the light was feint but the outline of images against this back-drop are strong.
His works span a long period of high-quality production, by Watanabe Shozaburo, the founder of the "Shin-Hanga" movement. This stunning and very RARE print came from the book, and is the most superb of the group of twelve. He worked and lived in Tokyo, studying under Kobayashi Eitaku. He was also the teacher of Kiritani Senrin. He was also a Kuchi-e [magazine] illustrator. Tomioka recommended him for a Sashi-e, or to be an 'illustrator' at the Hinode Shimbun [newspaper] in Kyoto. Like Eisen, Josen also did a good number of excellent Shunga. According to Richard Lane, this work was a collaborative effort of both artists.
